Orthosis - At Scoliosis Solutions, all the scoliosis orthoses are custom made from individual casts of the patients. We do not just take measurements, but take very precise molds that are modified for each individual patient. We offer an array of designs that can be incorporated into each orthosis. Scoliosis Solutions is the only company in the United States to utilize the Rigo-Cheneau Orthosis, a well documented European design.
Our practitioners have dedicated their professional lives to combating scoliosis.
Physical Therapy - At Scoliosis Solutions, orthotists and therapists are speaking the same language!
Our practice follows guidelines for conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. These guidelines are based on the book “Best Practice” in Conservative Scoliosis Care by Hans-Rudolf Weiss, MD, orthopedic surgeon. The theory is to strongly look at the Cobb angle, age of diagnosis, and continued risk for, including family history, as criteria for which options are selected for treatment.
Goals of conservative treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, (AIS) include stopping curve progression, improve cosmesis, improve general health, cope with deformities and treatment, and diminish functional limitations. Conservative management may include an orthosis and physical therapy.
The physical therapy program is based out of the Rockville, M.D. Location. This office is centrally located for the company and accessible from the Tri-State and Washington D.C. area. Our therapists have passed national boards, hold state licenses, and have completed the Schroth certification program in Barcelona Spain, taught by Dr. Manuel Rigo and Monica Villagrasa, P.T. in May 2006.
The physical therapy program utilizes therapeutic exercises, neuromuscular re-education, manual therapy, and/or therapeutic activities. The program is designed for each client, their particular curve and morphological presentation (appearance on the outside).
The physical therapy approach focuses on the following goals:
-
Decrease postural imbalance
-
Improve muscle strength and symmetry - focused on the core muscle groups
-
Enhance lung capacity and function with rotational breathing and elongation
-
Improve flexibility of spine and muscles
-
Diminish pain
-
Minimize functional deficits
Physical therapy utilizing the Schroth method works to address the necessary axial elongation and derotation specific to each individual curve. Adolescents and adults with scoliosis are approached with similar goals in mind; however, due to the tissue texture changes and boney changes that occur with aging, progression of treatment is slower in the adult population.
Physical Therapy sessions are one therapist to one patient for 1.5 to 2 hours at a time. Initial training is estimated to include 10-12 sessions at 2 hours in length. The number of sessions may include more or less than the estimate, based on the patient, severity of curve, and tolerance for the exercise. Initial training occurs over the course of 1-2 weeks. Typically, one can anticipate attending two, 2-hour sessions per day with a break between sessions during the intense training weeks. The cost of the initial training will be approximately $3800, but will vary due to the number of sessions required for each patient. Additional costs will be incurred for follow-up sessions.
Once the initial program has been completed, follow up appointments will be recommended by the physical therapist. Follow up visits are scheduled as needed. It is the patient/family responsibility to schedule all appointments.
Scoliosis Solutions operates as a Fee for Service practice accepting payment for therapy services at the time of your visit. Depending on your insurance policy, some component of your costs may be reimbursable to you. It is the responsibility of the patient/patient’s family to be educated in their individual insurance coverage for out-of-network physical therapy. Upon patient request, we will provide any documentation, receipts, etc. to assist each patient with the reimbursement process. Coverage is often based on diagnosis and medical necessity, as determined by the insurance company, and Scoliosis Solutions cannot guarantee coverage for services.
